Making The Change To A Induction Hob

Induction hobs

When it comes to choosing a new hob for your new kitchen, you may be curious about the benefits of induction hobs. They are quick, safe and efficient, and are fast becoming a popular choice in new kitchens.

What is an induction hob?

An induction hob uses electromagnetism to create a magnetic field between the pan and a copper coil beneath the glass top of the hob. For this reason, the base of your pan must have a high iron content. So, any cast iron pans, or black metal or iron pans will be fine on an induction hob. Stainless steel pans also work, but only if the base of the pan has a high level of iron content. To check, simply see if a magnet sticks to the base of your pan. If it does, then they are fine on an induction hob. Handy hint, eh?

Electricity from the induction hob is then passed through the copper coil, creating electromagnetic energy, which passes to your pan. This induces a current, which in turn produces heat.

This is effective because it is much quicker and cheaper to run than other hobs, and it is also safer, as the heat only transfers to the pan, so you can touch the hob without burning yourself. These hobs are especially popular with families for this reason.

Should you choose an induction hob?

Induction hobs are marvellous for a range of reasons: they are energy efficient, they work quickly and they are safe to touch. As well as this, they also come with a myriad of other helpful features, such as child safety locks, timers and different cooking zones. Being modern, induction hobs are generally very aesthetically pleasing and extremely stylish, and they make a lovely addition to any kitchen.

However, deciding if an induction hob is right for you will depend on a number of different factors. Although induction hobs are cheaper to run, they can be more expensive to buy, ranging anywhere in price from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds. Induction hobs are also slightly louder than other traditional hobs.

As well as this, you may need to invest in new pans, as only ferrous pans – pans that contain iron – will work on these hobs. If you do need new ones, iron pans are quite reasonably priced and readily available in most kitchenware stores.
